This volume brings together the Perspectives and Topical Reviews published during 1998 in The Journal of Physiology, and the in-depth and authoritative Physiological Society Annual Review Prize Lectures from 1997 and 1998, with the intention of making their content as accessible as possible to both students and researchers in physiology. The Journal of Physiology publishes original research papers that illustrate new physiological principles and mechanisms, with an emphasis on human and mammalian physiology. It is among the most rapidly published journals in its field, and has one of the highest citation indexes in physiology.
