Originally published in 1908, this collection for school children is comprised of a selection from the writings of the renowned explorer Captain John Smith (1580–1631). For the purposes of the edition, spelling is modernized throughout, excepting the spelling of unfamiliar names. Punctuation and paragraphing are also adapted. The introduction and notes are kept within narrow limits, leading the reader towards their own interpretation of the material.
