This report was made under the Superintendence of General Alexander Cunningham, the Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, after extensive survey of these regions. The report was published in 1887 from Calcutta.

What was aimed at was the accurate description of the Punjab and Rajputana regions illustrated by the plans, measurement, drawings, photographs and drawings of the inscriptions of such remains as most deserve notice with the history of them so far, as they may be traceable and a record of the traditions that were preserved regarding the same.
