Dr Chibnall has reconstructed the history of Sherington in north Buckinghamshire from little-known documents in the Public Records Office together with local and private records. After introductory chapters on the pre-Norman period Dr Chibnall gives a chronological account of the village's development. Some of the topics discussed are furlong names, the Domesday return, the impoverishment of the manorial families in late Tudor times, the yeomanry, and the effects on the village's economy of enclosure in neighbouring villages.
